Big Berg Drive By | Ross Sea, Antarctica

Day 44 of 110ish

A couple of days stand out amongst the relentless grind of crew life aboard a fishing vessel and today didn’t start out to be one of them. Until after lunch…

Eye Spy

Tangi, our skipper and fisherman extraordinaire, decided to change our fishing location and, as luck would have it, that meant that we would steam nearby a large iceberg.

In the Ross Sea, icebergs are around but they aren’t plentiful and most certainly aren’t this size!

I had been grateful that we were even going sort of close until Tangi said, ‘Stuff it, let’s go sightseeing’.

Stuff It, Let’s Go Sightseeing!

At that, the boat made an abrupt course correction and there was a buzz about the boat. The deckies came up from down below and I donned a thick winter jacket, grabbed my big camera and met the boys at the bow.

It was very exciting to be taking a wee break from the grind and enjoying the amazing place that we are living.

These massive chunks of ice are ethereal, magical, mesmerizing. These sculptures of the sea captivate you and it’s simply incredible to be in its presence. Even these hardened fishermen were getting excited!

Thanks Tangi!

I’ll be making him some special carrot cake cupcakes for his generosity 😀

The New Posi

Oh and the spot we’ve moved to has more ice and more icebergs! I’m liking this new location A LOT! You can tell by how many pictures we’re taking. 😀

We are seeing more animals and revelling in the scenery more and more! It’s like getting a new lease on life.
